By Associated Press: A West Michigan high school graduate who served three tours of war in Iraq has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan that also claimed the life of a soldier from Arkansas.
Culligan Funeral Home in Hamilton, Ohio, said Sunday that 32-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Robert A. Massarelli was killed June 24 in Kandahar. Massarelli’s parents Pat and Mary Massarelli live in Hamilton.
The Grand Rapids Press says Massarelli and Sgt. Michael Strachota of Pine Bluff, Ark., were fatally injured by an explosion. They were part of the 96th Transportation Company from Fort Hood, Texas.
The funeral home says Massarelli’s family moved from Hamilton to Michigan, and he graduated in 1998 from East Kentwood High School in Kentwood.
The Pentagon hadn’t announced the deaths by Sunday afternoon.
