When 1 in 88 is Really 1 in 29

In 2007 The CDC announced that autism affected 1 in 150 children in the United States. What the CDC failed to make clear to the general public is that the numbers they reported in 2007 were actually from data collected in 2002. The numbers were five years old. After the 2007 announcement from the CDC, Raymond W. Gallup and F. Edward Yazbak, M.D. FAAP wrote an article titled, “When 1 in 150 is Really 1 in 67.” As the authors of that article explained, the data reported in 2007 involved 8 year-old children who were born in 1994.

Last week The CDC announced that autism now affects 1 in 88 children (1 in 54 boys) in the United States. True to form, The CDC failed to make it clear that the numbers they reported on March 29, 2012 were from data collected in 2008. The numbers are four years old. The CDC also failed to mention that their number of 1 in 88 reflects their calculation of autism for 8 year-old children who are enrolled in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. This study monitors the rate of autism among children in 14 communities in the United States. The following map of the United States shows the states (in blue) where ADDM data is collected. However, please realize that even though the STATES are colored in blue, the data is only collected from very specific areas within each state. I think this is a little misleading, but then, we’re talking about The CDC so what can you expect?

States where ADDM data was collected for the year 2008 – reported March 29, 2012.

When I look at the map above, the first thing I notice is that the information used to estimate the autism rate was gathered from states that, according to IDEA data, do not have the highest rates of autism. Again… It just seems that if The CDC really wanted to know the true extent of the autism epidemic (or really wanted to report it accurately), they would look at the areas where the rate is known to be the highest. Wouldn’t you think?

The table below shows the autism rate by state, according to the U.S. IDEA data. This is data that is reported by public school systems throughout the U.S. and reflects children who have an autism diagnosis and are receiving intervention services through the school system.

Katie Wright: Confessions of an Obese Autism Mom

Fat skinny

Posted By Leah

By Katie Wright

OK, my secret is out. I am a big fat load and my out of control eating caused my son’s autism. The minute I found out I was pregnant I started eating all the food I could get my hands on. I ate a lot of tuna fish. My doctor says it is good for the baby and perfectly safe if I ate it 3-4 times week. I was 45 when my son was born and my husband was 70. I am told those are the typical ages of new parents who later have a child diagnosed with autism.

When I wasn’t eating I laid awake at night scheming how I could secure a disproportionate amount of ouPie eaterr city’s educational services for my unborn child. If Christian had to have a disability so be it! I wanted those easily available free services given to all children with disabilities. In fact I actually sought out the autism diagnosis because I heard that a lot of families in my neighborhood had autistic kids and were receiving all these incredible therapies. As Dr. Peter Bearman says, autism is socially contagious! Don’t I know it!

As I got fatter and fatter I got social security to pay for a jazzy scooter. How I loved zipping around town, knowing I had, yet again, figured out a way to work the system!

Days1I lived on the edge when I was pregnant. I watched a lot of TV (now I Pregnant drugs

know TV is a major autism trigger.) I walked in the rain (apparently very dangerous to unborn children.) I knew I was playing with fire but I loved it!

Whenever I was slightly sick I immediately scooted over to my doctor’s office and demanded all the medication I could get. Like all Moms I liked to take a lot of medication during pregnancy. I never gave a thought to how it would affect my unborn child. Anti-biotics, SSRIs, you name it I took it! A healthy Mom is a happy Mom, right?

RipoffThen there was the stress. In retrospect I have learned that stress probably causes autism as well! Who knew? Stress was hard for me to avoid while pregnant. Do you think it’s easy dreaming up schemes to rip off the government? Well it’s not. Sure I loved my government paid for Jazzy scooter but getting around when you are obese turned out to be hard, stressful work. While I was pregnant I was really worried and stressed out that my child might not qualify for all the amazing, free educational services in my town. I needed a back up plan. I scouted out other towns with more services and made plans to move if I lucked out and autism was in the cards.

So imagine my shock when I had a healthy baby boy who reached all his developmental milestones on time and did not qualify for any free services! What a disappointment!

I had heard that postnatal factors are not relevant to autism causation. After all, almost all research is done on the prenatal period. So I accepted my lot. It looked like I would have a healthy, typical child with no developmental problems.

Despite the fact we almost never left the house and I only allowed about 4 people to hold Vaccinate many needles

Christian as an infant I decided that the CDC was right and my son needed to be immediately vaccinated for 6 different diseases at 2 months old. Measles is only a plane ride away you know! I have heard a lot of parents claiming that so many vaccines so early could be dangerous. What nonsense! I checked the CDC website and it assured me that lots and lots and lots of vaccines were perfectly safe for newborns.

Sure Christian had a day long super fever, felt really stiff and would not eat drink or sleep for 24 hrs after the vaccinations but that was just a coincidence. Plus my son kind of rebounded afterwards so I am sure there was no real damage done. After the 12 and 18 months round of mega shots Christian had the same bad reactions. This time the fevers lasted for many days and bad diarrhea started. It was such an inconvenience to me. I mean I did not want my son to be sick, just be quirky enough to get free services. However, pediatrician assured me that these fevers were perfectly normal.

Weep

Soon after that I started to notice that my son was sick a lot. Christian caught strep a bunch of times. His diapers were filled with really gross liquid BMs like 5 times a day. He developed eczema all over his body and seemed really “checked out” went I tried talking with him. This had nothing to do with autism but I wanted these weird problems to go away.

The pediatrician told me that these post vaccination problems were no big whoop and Christian would be fine. Strangely enough by the time he was about 20 months old a friend of mine said that Christian might qualify for special services after all. Naturally I was thrilled! It would be like getting a private school education for free!

Unfortunately the early intervention services did not seem to really help my son, maybe because he was sick all the time? Who knows? Well it turned out autism was a lot more than I bargained for. The sicknesses got worse and Christian started waking up for hours every night. Experts told me Christian would be fine and to stay away from “special diets and other unproven, crazy biomedical interventions.” Good advice I heeded!

It is really annoying that my son now has severe autism. It turns out that those “special services” barely pay for anything! I actually have to shell out a LOT of my own money most of the time. What a crock!

Some people tell me that all the negative reactions to the mega vaccines injections might have something to do with Christian’s autism. I say no way! First of all the CDC and the AAP assured me that his reactions were normal, secondly postnatal problems cannot cause autism. And finally everyone knows that those “anti vaccine” parents are just looking for something or someone to blame. Looking back I am certain Christian’s severe autism was, unfortunately, caused by my fat genes. Autism is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I really regret being obese while pregnant. None of this was worth the Jazzy scooter.

P.S. Members of the CDC and I are holding a big fundraiser for more research on “how parents Money down drain dollar sign water

caused their child’s autism.” Hope to see you there!

Autism Increase Downplayed by CDC

April 19, 2012 | Filed under: Healthcare | Posted by:

Autism is on the rise. The latest reports released through the Center for Disease Control (CDC) show that 1 in 88, eight year olds have been diagnosed with the communication disorder. This figure is up from 1 in 110, reported in 2009. It is a significant increase. 23% increase according to the CDC.

The CDC stipulates that, “Some of this increase is due to the way children are identified, diagnosed, and served in their communities, although exactly how much is due to these factors is unknown.” With that said they point out that the figures are higher in states with more sophisticated organizations to identify the disorder. It is a point well taken. If you don’t look for something, you don’t find it. But are they trying to tell us that all these young children with “autism spectrum disorder” have always been roaming around unidentified and that in states that aren’t organized to identify them there are just as many only we don’t know about it? That could be interpreted to mean the number of autistic children is still higher and the increase greater.

What is even more disturbing is that the figures represent a survey taken from 2002 to 2008. What will the figures bringing us up to 2012 tell us? Whatever they tell us, it will be discounted because the American Psychiatric Association (APA) will have redefined “autism spectrum disorder”. They are in the process of doing it now and will release the new definition in December.

The APA is working on the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the standard reference for mental disorders. It is used in determining treatment and insurance decisions. This will be its first major revision in seventeen years. Currently a child must display 6 or more of 12 behaviors to be diagnosed, under the new definition they would have to exhibit 3 deficits in social interaction and communication, and at least 2 repetitive behaviors. The APA says this does not necessarily constitute a narrower definition.

Some doctors and parents are angry; it potentially means that children with special needs won’t be receiving help. Dr. Fred Volkmar, a researcher at Yale, who resigned from the APA panel in protest said, “I want to be sure we’re not going to leave some kids out in the cold.” Volkmer says the revision could exclude almost 40% of children with true autism. The APA says the figures he used in this analysis are two decades old.

Twenty years ago there was no “autism spectrum disorder”, that was term was created for the last edition of the DSM. Before that it was simply “autism”. Does this mean that kids who were diagnosed with autism twenty years ago won’t be diagnosed with it now? The switch to the “autism spectrum disorder” was supposed to have broadened the definition, fueling the increased numbers diagnosed.

It would seem that the CDC and the APA are trying to fight the increase in autism by manipulating statistics. There is no definitive test for autism. The diagnosis in use since the last DSM covers children who once were called mentally retarded, as well as some who might have merely been considered odd. On the way out is the inclusion of Asperger’s Syndrome which is responsible for a large portion of the increase.

While the APA and the CDC spout numbers there are actually researchers looking into possible causes. The CDC is not happy with some of them. At the top of the list is are Danish doctors who demonstrated that removing preservative Thimerosal, which is made of over 49% mercury, from vaccines led to a decrease in childhood autism. Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the CDC allowed an article to be published in the journal “Pediatrics’ that excluded large amounts of information, misrepresenting a documented decline in autism in Denmark as an increase.

The CDC is vaccine crazed and doesn’t seem to tolerate any information that the preservatives used in them, even when made of acknowledged poisons like mercury, are dangerous and can spur side effects. The CDC charged the doctor who worked on the Danish study, who had received a CDC grant, with fraud, suing him for millions of dollars as well. The “Pediatrics” article is still cited as the source that Thimerosal is safe and does not cause autism. Simply said, that is not true.

But there is more at work in potential causes of autism than vaccines. A study released by the National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed a strong correlation of gastrointestinal symptoms with autism severity showing that children with more severe autism are likely to have more severe gastrointestinal symptoms and vice versa. Concluding that, “It is possible that autism symptoms are exacerbated or even partially due to the underlying gastrointestinal problems.”

GI symptoms like constipation and diarrhea are common in autism and specific types of bacteria are more prevalent in significant numbers of autistic children. In regard to treatment, the report stated, “Treatment studies using a minimally absorbed oral antibiotic (vancomycin) to treat abnormal gut flora showed significant temporary improvements in behavior for children with late-onset autism, but the benefits were lost after treatment stopped. This study demonstrated the importance of gastrointestinal flora and the difficulty in permanently normalizing them.”

The gastrointestinal connection was also made by British doctor Andrew Wakefield. Wakefield and some of those working with him were publically vilified a few years ago for cooking their statistics. The British stripped them of their medical licenses. Subsequent investigations showed the statistics were not cooked and one of Wakefield’s colleagues was recently cleared of misconduct charges by the British courts, citing a lack of evidence, and has had his license reinstated. Dr. Wakefield now practices in the U.S.

The Wakefield case was much publicized by the CDC PR machine. Since then several peer review studies have confirmed his findings. The CDC is mum about that. So what is the heated debate all about? Wakefield’s study suggests there may be a link between the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine with bowel disease and autism. The link was made to MMR vaccine by the presence, in the guts of the children studied, of the unique virus used in the vaccine.

It should also be noted that the imbalance in gut flora is also found in a significant portion of the mothers of autistic children. The use of fermented foods and probiotics foods for babies is recommended. A recent survey also suggests a correlation between women who gain too much weight in pregnancy and autistic children. There is a possible genetic connection as well due to the mutation of certain genes which are passed from mother to child.

If further proof is needed, I defer to my son-in-law who is a kindergarten teacher. He has more autistic kids in his class now than he did a few years ago. In short, there is a lot more going on with autism than statistical abnormalities. The increase is real.

The pertinent questions are, “Who is behind the character assassinations of doctors who try to make the autism/thimerasol/vaccine connection?” and “Why won’t the CDC address the medical/nutritional aspects of the problem?”

Michigan Autism coverage bill signed into law

Autism coverage bill signed into law

  • By Kathy Barks Hoffman
  • Associated Press

Lansing— Insurance companies will have to offer coverage for autism  treatments six months from now, a move the parent of one autistic boy said will  make a huge difference to families struggling to pay for their children’s  treatment.

“This legislation means the world to us and to thousands of other families  across the state of Michigan,” said Scott Koenigsknecht of Fowler, who attended  a bill-signing ceremony at the official governor’s residence Wednesday with  7-year-old Cooper and the rest of his family. “The beauty of this legislation is  … no family will have ever to leave a doctor’s appointment without some kind  of hope.”

Diagnosed with autism at age 21/2, Cooper now is attending first grade with  the help of a full-time aide, and he’s functioning at a higher level than he  would have without treatment, his father said.

As the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District superintendent,  Koenigsknecht said Michigan school districts pay more than $150 million a year  to educate children with autism, an amount that could decrease if more families  get insurance to cover treatment.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, whose daughter, Reagan, has been diagnosed with  autism, signed the measures into law Wednesday with Reagan standing nearby. Gov.  Rick Snyder is visiting Michigan National Guard troops in Afghanistan.

Lawmakers gave final approval to the measures last month, and both  Republicans and Democrats who worked on the legislation said it was the plight  of families trying to pay for their children’s treatment that made the  legislation so critical.

“When things are personal, you work a lot harder,” said Democratic Sen.  Rebekah Warren of Ann Arbor.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, a Monroe Republican who has been a  state lawmaker for nearly a dozen years, called the effort “the single best  piece of bipartisan work I’ve seen in my career.” Richardville said he had to  find a bill that would not be an unfunded mandate. His solution was to set up a  fund to help reimburse some companies for paid claims related to diagnosis and  treatment of autism.

Some advocates said the measure should have required coverage for all mental  health issues children face.

Chile Stops Use of Mercury in Vaccines

WASHINGTON, April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Decision Comes as WHO Meets to Discuss Global Treaty on Mercury Use

Chile has become the first developing country to stop the use of mercury in vaccines.

In meetings with the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs (CoMeD) held last week in Santiago, Chile, the current Vice President of the Chilean Senate, Alejandro Navarro Brain, committed to adopting legislation in the Senate that would prohibit the mercury-based preservative Thimerosal from vaccines.

Thimerosal, which is 49% mercury by weight, continues to be used as a preservative in vaccines and other drugs worldwide, despite the fact that it is a human neurotoxin and that safer, less toxic alternatives are readily available.

Chile’s decision comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) meets today in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss a global, legally-binding treaty on mercury use. That meeting will examine alternative vaccine preservatives, as well as the economic, programmatic, and manufacturing implications of moving to single-dose, preservative-free vaccines.

While applauding the WHO for giving the issue of mercury use in vaccines the urgent attention it merits, CoMeD expressed serious reservations about WHO’s decision to meet in closed-door session.

Noting that past closed-door sessions have led to “repeated and, we believe, untrue declarations that there is no evidence of harm from the use of Thimerosal in vaccines,” the Reverend Lisa K. Sykes, President of CoMeD, states, “Such unfounded assertions have led to the establishment of two standards of vaccine safety, one which is predominately mercury-free for developed, western countries and one that is mercury-preserved for developing countries.”

As a result, Rev. Sykes continues, “The most vulnerable among us continue to be intentionally exposed to mercury from Thimerosal in childhood vaccines. This exposure is entirely avoidable, and must be stopped.”

Dr. Mark R. Geier, a CoMeD Director, agrees, adding, “Recent statements by those holding national and global responsibility for vaccine safety are difficult to reconcile with the known and published toxicity of Thimerosal.”

According to CoMeD, numerous scientific studies and extensive peer-reviewed scientific and medical papers have all concluded that Thimerosal poses a significant health risk. Thimerosal manufacturers also acknowledge that the preservative can cause mild to severe mental retardation in children.
