The O’Leary: We lost our legitimacy to protest torture by other countries, we are about to lose (if we haven’t already) our legitimacy to protest other police states.

The decision by a New York grand jury not to indict New York City police officer Daniel Pantaleo for the chokehold death of Eric Garner prompted protests throughout the city and across the nation. On Wednesday night’s “Daily Show,” it also left Jon Stewart momentarily speechless.

“I don’t know, I honestly don’t know what to say,” he stammered.

“If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more fucking time,” Stewart said. “But I would really settle for less fucking tragedy to be honest with you.”

Stewart was flabbergasted by the fact that the Garner case, unlike the Michael Brown case, had videotaped evidence but still ended with the same result.

“Damn,” Stewart said. “We are definitely not living in a post-racial society. And I can imagine there are lot of people out there wondering how much of a society we’re living in at all.”
