He’s done it again. Rusty

Gates has been honored with the

2008 FFF Conservation Award.

He was nominated by the

Great Lakes Council. Actually,

Terry Lyons, Anglers’ Director,

nominated him:

“Rusty has become the ‘go to

guy’ for river conservation issues

in Michigan. When river conservation

organizations need help, he

is always one of the first that they


This award recognizes

extraordinary efforts toward

the conservation of our fisheries


In an e-mail, Leah Elwell,

FFF Conservation Coordinator,

summed up this year’s recipient:

“Rusty Gates was chosen as a

conservation leader for his contributions

to catch and release regulations

on the Au Sable River,

his advocacy on state legislation

on projects that would affect water

withdrawal, and local zoning

regulations to benefit fisheries.

Whether leading stream cleanup

work, engaging in critical lawsuits,

or advocating for fisheries,

Rusty has put in over 20 proud

years of work for our fisheries.

The Federation of Fly Fishers

thanks Mr. Gates for his passion

for fisheries. May his work continue

for many years.”
